Story patterns are a key part of creating a film because it creates an essential foundation and framework that helps allow audiences to follow the narrative, connect with characters, and comprehend the progression of plot. This pertains especially to horror and thriller films where the story patterns are very similar. Most movies in this genre tend to be set up in the same 3-act structure, in act one the main threat appears, in act two the threat builds and the characters begin to fight with it, and lastly in act three the characters and the antagonist have a final confrontation which ends in a resolution with a lasting impact. Some major horror films that follow this structure are, "The Exorcist" and "The Shining." These films all successfully use this structure to create not just an engaging narrative but evoke significant feelings in viewers that impact them and leave them wanting more.
To further specify, a movie like this would begin with a normal setting that starts to become more and more suspicious. From here, an ominous threat would be revealed then the protagonists would recognize the threat and face danger. After building up suspense, the protagonists would face off with the threat which will ultimately lead to usually either the death or survival with immense trauma. This structure creates a linear narrative that makes it easy for viewers to comprehend and follow along with instead of being forced to focus on too many intricate details.
Since my film project will be the opening scenes to a movie, my video will contain mostly features from an act one where the seemingly normal setting is present but a menacing threat appears and causes rising suspicion. The normal setting will be the teenage girls at home getting ready and then leaving to head to school. The threat will initially present itself behind the car but will become more suspicious when he is watching from afar. My project will end with him about to kill my protagonist best friend, Grace, which establishes him as the antagonist which is Charlotte's, my protagonist, stalker.
Creating a story pattern in film takes many components, a very important one is careful pacing. This is because the pacing determines how the tension of the film escalates and builds the anticipation in viewers which keeps them on the edge of their seat for the entire film and can leave them feeling lingering feelings of fear or uneasiness even after the ending of the movie. The pacing also aids in the creation of jump scares because when used meagerly, are extremely effective in creating lengthy senses of dread and dread. By using pacing to create my story structure for my project, I can build early feelings of anticipation and tension that will intentionally lead to viewers wanting more and to see what will occur next.
