Blog Post #8 - Preliminary Exercise

In this photo, I decided to use a mid-shot of the boy to show his body language and facial expression with slightly curved posture which can represent feelings of insecurity or sadness along with him looking out of the window which conveys he is in deep thought about something with a lot of meaning to him. The background of the shot, including the window, is unfocused to also put more emphasis on his facial expression. I chose this specific location because of the window that showed his reflection in it because it can be used to symbolize introspection and self-reflection mentally while physical reflection is being shown. Something I could have done better with this show is using more low-key lighting to continue with the theme of sadness and thought while adding further dramatization.

This picture is a close-up angle of two people holding hands, I chose to do a close-up of this because it shows an emotional connection between the subjects of the photo and to show the nails of the girl. The color of them, the dark red, represents passion and mystery which can be felt by viewers by noticing how the girl is leading the boy somewhere. The high-key lighting of the photo also helps create a bright atmosphere to convey an optimistic mood. To improve this picture, I could have chose a different background instead of the red wall since that tone of red does not symbolize the same feelings as other details in the photo.

The next photo is of an office in a hallway that was taken from a mid-angle while using rule-of-thirds to place the end of the sign along the left vertical line. I chose to use shallow focus in this to place significant emphasis on the office sign to show its importance because its purpose is to establish the location. This picture was taken in high-key, bright lighting to create a positive mood and create an open-feeling space. I should have waited to take the photo until the people in the hallway cleared out in order to keep all focus on the sign and not on the blurry people in the background.

The last photo I took for this exercise is a two-shot from a high angle. I chose to utilize this angle because it shows their body language where there is a noticeable distance between them to show their uncomfortableness while both looking away from each other at different things to symbolize the different things on their minds. This location was perfect for this photo because of the red wall and lighting. Since the color red usually represents some form of anger and love, the color can help viewers subconsciously notice that they may be a couple having issues. The lighting here was useful due to the cut off where the girl is in bright lighting from a backlight while the boy is positioned in a darker area to make her seem more hopeful and positive while he seems more negative and foreboding. This photo may have been better if the poster on the wall was not present because it may take away from the focus on the two subjects.
