In horror movies, there are many themes inside and embedded into the film using countless small components that convey different things to audiences. Typically in horror movies, the genre tends to rely more on playing into different common fears. Some themes that are used very often are isolation, fear of the unknown, loss, death, mental instability, and supernatural ideas. These are all very real and valid fears that everyday people have so by combining them in a film creates a movie that can reach out to different audiences and create intended emotions in the audience while keeping them invested. They also build depth and meaning way beyond just frights. The audiences can connect with societal problems and deeper fears through a scary movie to reflect on our own inner vulnerabilities and anxieties. Especially when using themes like paranoia or grief because these can resonate with viewers on a personal level and create connections. By utilizing the fear of the unknown and paranoia in my film project, I can create a connection for viewers by playing into their fears and anxiety for the characters. Overall, the use of horror themes in the genre elevates it and from just a frightening or anxiety raising experience to one that makes people consider these movies in relation to themselves to create complexity and value.
Continuing, thriller films also often use major defining themes in order to create a well thought out narrative and film that can connect with its viewers. Some examples of these themes are danger, suspense, the human condition, political conspiracies, and racing against time. The key part of any thriller film is having high stakes. Whether its the characters life and the lives of their loved ones or power and money, the high stakes mixed with any theme create constant tension with fast-paced action that ultimately affect the audience by toying with their emotions and fears. The themes also often times force characters to react to conflict in specific ways that keep the story going while keeping the audience engaged. Also, the psychological impact these themes create is significant in building an underlying message to the audience to truly affect them and leave them thinking. By using the ideology of potential danger and suspense without dragging on small scenes in my film project, I can create a foundation for the narrative and how it would be structured to keep viewers invested and wanting to continue to watch.
