Blog Post #17 - Sounds Needed in My Project

Sound in film can range from background music to just the simple squeak of a door but nevertheless, they are all significant to the development of the diegesis and the film itself. In my film project, I require mainly small yet vital sounds that will assist in developing the plot and creating feelings in the viewers. Some of these sounds include background scores, dialogue, and foley sounds.

Firstly, a very important form of sound that is necessary for my film project is the background scores. The different scenes will require very different scores to align with the events and plot development throughout the opening sequence. Scores will probably be used during the scenes of the girls getting ready, the scene of Charlotte walking to the bathroom, and lastly as Grace is sitting in her room before being murdered. For the scenes with the girls getting ready, the score would have to be upbeat, girly, and have a positive connotation. Some song ideas I have for this are, "Something That I Want" by Grace Potters or "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper. Next, the scene of Charlotte walking to the bathroom would require a more suspicious and less energetic score. Lastly, for the scene of Grace's murder, the sound needs to begin melodic but get increasingly creepy as viewers start to realize what is about to happen. I will need to do more research on what to use for both of these scenes to find the proper audios to match up with the aesthetic of the film and the intended feeling of each scene.

Second, another important form of sound necessary in my film project is dialogue. The dialogue will only occur between Charlotte and Grace throughout the scenes since it is only the opening sequence. Because of this, I have to ensure that I chose good actors that fit not only the intended look but also the speaking personality to match the character. Graces dialogue should come off as more confident and outspoken while Charlottes should be more unsure and hesitant but not too much.

Third, the last intended form of sounds I need to add to my project are a few foley sounds. The other diegetic sounds will be able to be created as I film but two specific sounds I need to layer over the scenes while editing are the school bell, the alarm clock, and the sound of the knife. To create the school bell, I may have to find an different audio to layer over in editing if recreating it does not go as intended but, I want to use a metal bowl and metal spoon to create the sound if possible. If I simply filmed the scene with the alarm playing, the sound would not carry over properly through the scene cuts so, I will record an alarm clock going off with my phones microphone and add it to the film sequence. Finally, in the scene where Grace is murdered, Grace realizes the stalker is behind her and that's where the scene goes black. Once the scene goes black, I intend for the sound of the knife to be heard. The sound can be recreated by stabbing a knife into soil or into an orange. I discovered these tactics through my research and hopefully they will create the perfect sound for my film project.
