Blog Post #15 - Props

Props are absolutely crucial when it comes films, especially in horror/thriller movies. This is because they help create a realistic feel that is more immersive for audiences, give sub context in to the characters and plot, and to add overall depth to the film itself. For my film project, I intend to use various props in order to communicate different meanings and small meticulous details.

The first, and probably most important prop I plan on including in my project is the murder weapon. For this, I will be using a plastic fake knife with fake blood on it to show that it is what the stalker will use to murder his victims. In horror films, knives typically represent feelings of terror, oppression, menace, and the underlying fears of the characters. This weapon was specifically chosen because of the feelings it creates and due to knives being a part of countless classic horror films like "Scream" or "Halloween."

Continuing, another basic prop that is going to be used in my film is makeup. This will be used earlier in my film sequence when parallel editing will be used to film Grace and Charlotte getting ready for the day. Makeup was chosen as a prop because it enhances the girls personalities and represents their femineity so that feminism stereotypes can be conveyed. This can also help indicate the characters moods at the beginning of the video.

The next important prop that will be used is a car. The car is meant to be a part of a key scene in the opening sequence where the threat is revealed. My intention for this scene is to use my older brother's car to film. His car is a light gray color which typically symbolizes intelligence and calmness. The color helps add more detail and sub-context to the scene because it shows how the Charlotte is smart by recognizing the feeling of the threat but also showing the calmness of their lives before the threat interrupts it. Many more props will be used in my filming process and the creation of my project but these few are key to major parts of the opening sequence and the messages I want to convey.
