Blog Post #3 - Genre research

The genre I chose for my final project is a combination of the horror and thriller genres. These two genres pair together very well since they can help each other create extravagant feelings and consistent interest in the story for the audience. This hybrid experience keeps viewers entertained and invested during the entire film through the anticipation and excitement it creates before the horror elements evoke the fear that the audience knows is coming. This expectation allows creators to write their stories around feelings and more psychological concepts with the effect on viewers the scenes they create can leave behind.

The horror genre is used very often in modern films to create scare, startle, shock, and fear in audiences with the purpose of entertaining them. The genre itself has gone through major changes and reconstruction through the last century after its creation in the mid-1890's after George Mellies created a three minute film that built a base for horror and its major elements. After this, horror began to develop and progress until the 1960's when gore and slasher films took hold in America which resulted in extremely high profits and a few masterpieces for that era. Continuing through time to present day, religious evil horror and slasher films have become most popular for the genre and eventually brought the industry to it's present state. The long time precedence in media of horror has allowed for some of the greatest film creations and the best inspiration for projects like mine.

Thrillers are films that are categorized through their entertaining and alluring face pace, unreliability, and consistent fear induced events. These themes build a complicated combination of intense suspense, scare, and anxiety which many viewers enjoy and hold the attention of many media audiences. Typically, these movies are concerned with crime, revenge, murder, and other very popular horror or action film concepts. This genre is majorly known for the emotion intensity that is present which creates an engaged, focused audience because they are too afraid of missing anything or are far too intrigued to look away. These films are best when the topic and narrative is carefully researched and meticulously written to be complex so that audiences feel the same confusion and anxiety as the characters in the movie. The thriller genre overall relies on the audiences understanding and interest in the plot as well as the small details.

Lastly, for my project I will be incorporating these themes into my opening sequence through the use of similar concepts and major ideas that are usually in these films. By creating suspense through score and contrast in lighting, certain scenes can be given a much more suspicious feel. Short takes will also be used to build into the fast-paced thriller ideology along with some fear elements that are prioritized in the horror genre. In summary, these genres and their elements are a vital piece of inspiration and guidelines that will assist me in the writing and creation of my film project.
