For my final project in AS level Media Studies, my film will be a thriller/murder mystery concept. The film will be based off of teenage characters so that I can utilize stereotypes and representations concerning teenagers, especially teenage girls. My goal with this opening sequence is to create interest in the film that encourages audiences to want to see more and to create early themes and ideas that are communicated well. Some potential inspirations for this project are films and TV shows like:
- "Scream" (2022)
- "Time Cut"
- "Alexa & Katie"
The basic concept and idea for my film is that Charlotte Kennedy is just a normal junior in high school who can't wait to get out of her suffocating town. But, as her best friends start disappearing, she can't help but investigate what's been happening. Eventually she realizes that they've all been murdered in the same brutal way and she notices how they are all connected to her. She attempts to draw the killer out by creating a fake Instagram post of one of her old friends and through gaining assistance from her friends. Charlotte knows she must kill him to be free of his hold on her life so she traps him but every thing that could go wrong, goes wrong. All of her friends she got help from were murdered by the killer which results in a final face off between the her and the killer where she burns her house down with them both inside so that no one else will ever have to face him.
For the opening sequence of this movie, which is what I will film for my final project, I will include Charlotte and her best friend waking up and getting ready using parallel editing. Then, the best friend, Grace Cooper, will pick her up from her house where as she's getting into the car, she has this haunting feeling of eyes on her so she looks around at her surroundings. As Grace rushes her, she brushes off the feeling and leaves for school but, as the car takes off, a dark figure becomes visible from behind the car where Charlotte felt she was being stared at from. The next scene will show the two girls walking into school and talking about that morning and what happened. After another time jump, Charlotte will be with Grace in the school hall ways, again feeling eyes on her and looking around. When she sees nothing, she goes to the bathroom but the dark figure shows up looking around the corner of the hall. Next, Grace will be in her room studying when she receives a message saying, "Charlotte isn't crazy." She is extremely confused and texts back, "Who is this?," But as she's typing, the camera switches to the point of view of her phone and dollies out so that you can see the killer behind her with his phone in his hand where there is a picture of Charlotte and a knife. Next, the scene cuts back to her phone where it shows a text saying, "Turn around." The final scene would show a close up of her facial expression changing.
The length of time that I currently have for this project is about ten weeks to plan, film, and edit the entire thing. I assume that planning will take the longest amount of time to ensure that every decision is intentional and that the scenes can be recorded with the proper features and quality. Editing should not take very long as long as all scenes are filmed as intended so that my vision may come to life with this project. Throughout the process, I will also take time o update my blog 4-6 times weekly. My tentative timeline for this project is as follows:
- Week 1: Develop a plan for basic concept of project, research, find inspiration
- Week 2: Write story board and begin script
- Week 3: Finish story board and script writing
- Week 4: Finalize planning and prep (actors, sound, props)
- Week 5: Begin filming
- Week 6: Continue filming
- Week 7: Retake scenes as necessary
- Week 8: Begin editing
- Week 9: Continue editing
- Week 10: Final touches and submit final project
